Or as the L5 said: “ Air! Air! It’s just a matter of survival.”

There's a lot of talk about mattress breathability. But what does that mean exactly? Why is it so important? And most importantly: is it equally important to everyone (pun intended)?

First of all, how do you recognize a breathable mattress? The elements used will be: convoluted foam, honeycomb foam, or even individual pocket springs. All of these components create air space inside the mattress and are all technical elements (sometimes a little complicated to understand) to provide the same thing: air!

Why is it so important for the mattress to breathe?

The result for you is that you will fall asleep on a mattress at a temperature that is similar to room temperature.

But to find sleep, the cooler it is in your room, and the more thermoregulated the mattress, the faster you will find a deep and restful sleep.

How is that explained, you ask?

At bedtime, the body relaxes and its temperature gradually drops as muscles relax and bodily activity decreases. At the same time, as we sleep at night (usually), the ambient temperature also drops drastically. These two temperature drops will cause us to fall into a deep, restorative sleep.

This explains why in summer we generally go to bed later, because the ambient temperature cools down later in the day, but also because being hot takes our body longer to want to fall into a deep sleep. Fatigue catches us later.

What does this have to do with your mattress ?

Your mattress, made of very dense foam —which provides perfect support for your spine—will therefore quite logically store heat. Fortunately, we now have technologies for manufacturing cellular foams that allow for dense yet airy foam. At Morphéa, this technology is called Ergofresh.

For hybrid mattresses , the presence of pocket springs ensures this ventilation inside the mattress.

And for latex mattresses , the natural fiber is resilient and inherently breathable.

However, while all mattresses, regardless of their composition, will have a breathing technique, not all breathability is calculated to the same degree. We invite you to check the breathability index to assess the product that best suits you.

Who is it important for?

While our body temperature drops at the end of the day, it often rises in the middle of the night, due to sleeping under duvets (textiles that will increase your body temperature), or next to a partner who will keep us warm. Or simply due to the fact that we move a lot during our sleep and produce natural heat.

Many people therefore suffer from the heat during the night , and some will even wake up because they are too hot.

Finally, if you live in a place where temperatures rise quickly in summer (like in the South of France for example, or in Corsica)... you also have more interest in choosing a mattress with optimal breathability .

FAQs

What are the mattress sizes?

In France, standard bed sizes range from 90x190 cm for a single bed to 200x200 cm for larger beds. The most common sizes are 140x190 cm (standard), 160x200 cm (queen size), and 180x200 cm (king size).

Is it possible to put a 140x190 cm mattress in a 140x200 cm bed?

Yes, but there will still be a 10 cm gap along its length. This can be an aesthetic or structural issue; it's best to stick to the dimensions of the bed base.

What is the standard size of a mattress?

In France, the standard size of a mattress for a couple is 140x190 cm . For a single person, it is generally 90x190 cm .

What size mattress should a couple choose?

The standard size is 140x190 cm , but the 160x200 cm (queen size) is considered the ideal size for couples thanks to better sleeping independence.

When should you replace a mattress?

On average every 8 to 10 years , or sooner if you experience pain, hollows or a loss of comfort.

What is the best size for a mattress?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer. For a single person, a 90x200 cm bed offers a good compromise. For a couple, a 160x200 cm (queen size) is often the most popular. If your space allows, a 180x200 cm (king size) provides maximum comfort.
