A mattress, even when protected by clean sheets, always ends up accumulating what you can't see: moisture, dust, small stains... and sometimes bad smells that develop.

In this article, you will learn how to properly disinfect a mattress without damaging it: first a simple routine to sanitize the surface of the mattress, then a deep cleaning with everyday products (such as baking soda or white vinegar) and precise steps (warm/hot water, application time, drying).

Objective: to have a healthier, fresher mattress, and to prevent hygiene problems from recurring.

In summary

  • For a fresh mattress every day: vacuum the surface and seams, then apply baking soda for deodorization (leave on for a long time, vacuum thoroughly).
  • To freshen your mattress if it has an odor or stains: use diluted white vinegar in a spray bottle, dab the area, and let it dry completely. If the stain is stubborn, use washing soda crystals (diluted, on small areas, and wear gloves).
  • If the goal is to eliminate dust mites : disinfect your bedding and add a full dust mite-proof cover. Wash regularly in hot water, with the bed opened in the morning, and control humidity, rather than using a "miracle product".

Why disinfect your mattress (hygiene, odors, allergies, lifespan)?

A mattress is like a giant sponge. It absorbs, it retains, it accumulates. Even if the surface of the mattress looks clean, it can harbor allergens and residues (dust, dander, moisture) that promote odors and discomfort.

Regularly cleaning and disinfecting your mattress means:

  • Reduce bad odors (rather than mask them).
  • Limit allergens when you are sensitive (dust, dust mites).
  • Protecting comfort : a damp or dirty mattress “breathes” less well.
  • Avoid recurrence : when you treat the cause (humidity + dirt), you don't have to repeat the problem every month.

How often should a mattress be disinfected?

  • Once a month : vacuum the surface and ventilate (surface maintenance, anti-dust and anti-odor routine).
  • Every 6 months : deep cleaning (or at each change of season).
  • After an incident : stain, sudden odor → immediate targeted treatment followed by drying.

If you have allergies (or want to limit dust mites), the French National Health Insurance recommends very concrete measures for your bedding: to use airtight anti-dust mite covers that enclose the mattress on all 6 sides, to “wash the bedding often at 60°C” and to “vacuum the mattress regularly”.

💡Before cleaning your mattress: the 3-minute checklist

  1. Remove sheets, covers, mattress protectors.
  2. Open the windows (ventilation is already 50% of the job).
  3. Look for: odorous areas, stains, halos.
  4. Prepare: vacuum cleaner, microfiber cloth, soft brush, spray bottle, gloves.

Note from Morphea experts: you don't wash a mattress like you wash a floor or a carpet. The goal is to clean your mattress without saturating it with water, otherwise the moisture remains trapped (and the odors return… worse than before).

How to disinfect your mattress in 3 steps?

Step 1: Clean the surface of the mattress

Before starting any recipe, we begin by removing what can be seen… and what cannot be seen.

  1. Slowly vacuum the entire surface of the mattress: seams, corners, pressure areas (shoulders/pelvis).
  2. Gently pat or brush with soft bristles (do not damage fabrics) in circular motions to remove dust and dead skin.
  3. If your mattress is reversible, flip it over and start again.

👉 Ideally, do this once a month if you want simple and effective maintenance. It's the most underestimated step… and the one that makes all the others more effective.

Step 2: Say goodbye to bad odors with baking soda

If you didn't already know, baking soda is the number 1 ally against odors and light dampness.

A simple and effective "odor-fighting" recipe to clean your mattress:

  • Sprinkle the bicarbonate generously and evenly over the entire surface of the mattress.
  • Option: add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil (true lavender or tea tree) to the bicarbonate before applying.
  • Leave on for at least 2 hours (ideally half a day).
  • Vacuum thoroughly.

Morphea tip : if the odor persists, repeat the process 24 hours later. This step alone won't completely disinfect your mattress, but it perfectly prepares it for a deep cleaning.

Step 3: Disinfect a mattress thoroughly with white vinegar

Here, we move to the next level. The goal: to disinfect your mattress without damaging it, and without soaking it either.

Follow our advice to sanitize an area or your entire mattress, especially if you have odors or small stains.

Add the following to a spray bottle:

  • 1 dose of white vinegar
  • 1 dose of lukewarm water

Instructions for use:

  1. Spray in a light mist (not a “shower”).
  2. Dab with a clean microfiber cloth.
  3. Allow to dry completely.
  4. If necessary, finish with baking soda (place + vacuum) to remove any remaining odors.

Step 4: Deep cleaning with washing soda crystals (stronger)

Soda crystals are effective when simple gentle cleaning is no longer sufficient: yellowed areas, old halos, a feeling of a “dirty” surface.

But be careful, you don't "stripped" a mattress, you clean it thoroughly while maintaining a minimal level of humidity, because it is the residual moisture that creates odor problems.

Always start with a simple rule: clean small areas at a time, and wring out as much as possible. The idea is to apply the solution to a cloth (or sponge) and not to soak the mattress.

Dosage:

  • 1 liter of hot (not boiling) water
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of washing soda crystals
Put on gloves: soda crystals are alkaline, therefore irritating to sensitive skin.

How to apply without soaking:

  1. Soak a sponge, then wring it out well: it should be damp, not dripping wet.
  2. Clean an area of approximately 30 × 30 cm, using gentle movements.
  3. Then wipe with a clean cloth slightly dampened with warm water (wrung out), only to remove surface residue.
  4. Finish by dabbing with a dry microfiber cloth.

The key factor that changes everything: drying

Once the area has been treated, move on to ventilation to dry your mattress. Open a window and use a fan if possible. The thicker your mattress, the more time you need to take to dry it thoroughly. This prevents odors from returning and avoids the feeling of trapped moisture.

Common mistakes

  • Increase the dosage "so it works faster" (you risk damaging the fabric)
  • rubbing aggressively (you will damage the cover)
  • treat the entire mattress at once (you multiply the drying time).

Which method should you choose depending on your problem?

Urine / vomi Tamponner + savon doux, puis bicarbonate Savon + eau tiède + bicarbonate Nettoyage local + séchage, puis bicarbonate Ne pas sécher / masquer l’odeur
Allergies / anti acariens Aspiration + literie à 60°C + housse Routine literie Mensuel (matelas) + hebdo (linge) Croire qu’un spray seul suffit
Vous voulez “désinfecter” (surface) Vapeur (si séchage OK) Vapeur faible Passage rapide + séchage immédiat Insister au même endroit

Disinfecting a mattress with steam: effective, but under certain conditions

Steam cleaning on a mattress does indeed sanitize the surface. It can be used as a surface treatment, for example against dust mites, but not as a deep cleaning method.

Indeed, a study published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy showed that steam cleaning could kill dust mites on contact and reduce a major allergen (Der p 1) in the home environment.

The sensitive point is residual moisture : a mattress is thick, and if it remains damp, odors return and the risk of mold increases.

The EPA reminds us that moistened materials must be completely dried within a window of approximately 24 to 48 hours to limit mold growth.

Instructions for steam cleaning:

  1. First, vacuum the surface of the mattress.
  2. Set your device to low/delicate fabric if possible.
  3. Make continuous movements without ever staying in the same place; you can work in strips.
  4. If the surface becomes damp to the touch: stop the steam, dab with a dry microfiber cloth and proceed to drying.
  5. Dry the mattress thoroughly: open window + fan directed towards the mattress.
  6. Make your bed only once the mattress is dry to the touch.

Do not use steam if:

  • If your room is damp (winter, difficult drying) : it is better to opt for dry cleaning (bicarbonate + vacuuming) rather than adding water.
  • Persistent musty smell : priority should be given to drying and ventilation (and sometimes a moisture diagnosis), as adding steam can worsen the problem.
  • Very thick mattress (or dense foam): prioritize local cleaning followed by long and controlled drying.

Anti-dust mite measures: actions that truly reduce allergens in bedding

Note that to fight dust mites, you must always limit what they like, namely: heat, humidity and dust.

Firstly, the Ministry of Health recommends very simple and concrete actions: ventilate the home twice a day, reduce the temperature (and aim for around 17°C at night in rooms that are not very occupied), limit sources of humidity, avoid rugs and carpets in the bedroom, and above all ventilate the bedding by leaving the bed open to remove the humidity and heat from the mattress.

Our most effective recommendations against dust mites

  • Mattress with an anti-dust mite cover : the cover must completely enclose the mattress (all sides) and seal tightly. If the allergy is severe, the same principle applies to pillows and possibly the duvet.
  • Wash bedding in hot water. Aim for a weekly wash of your sheets, pillowcases and duvet cover, at the highest temperature allowed by the label (often 60°C).
  • Air out your bedding, not just the bedroom. A good habit is to leave the bed open for a few minutes in the morning to release the heat and moisture that have accumulated in the mattress overnight. It's a small step… but very effective in making your environment less conducive to dust mites.
  • Keep your bedroom dry, cool, and dust-free. Dust mites thrive in humid and dusty environments: a small hygrometer will help you monitor the air quality and correct it quickly (airing, ventilation, dehumidification if necessary). When cleaning, prioritize surfaces that are easy to dust, limit rugs and carpets, and vacuum regularly. If you are particularly sensitive to dust, a vacuum cleaner with a high-performance filter (such as a HEPA filter) is a real advantage, especially for textiles.

⚠️ We strongly advise you to avoid "chemical" anti-dust mite products , even when they are marketed as "natural." They are often irritating, sometimes toxic, and give a false sense of a permanent solution. A clean, repeatable, and safe routine is better for your health (cover + washing + airing).

FAQ

How to thoroughly disinfect a mattress?

We recommend following these three steps: first, thoroughly vacuum the surface and seams; second, apply a baking soda odor treatment and leave it on for a sufficient amount of time; and finally, spot clean the stained areas with very little moisture (diluted white vinegar or mild soap and warm water on a well-wrung cloth).

How to disinfect a mattress of dust mites?

Wash sheets/pillowcases/duvet cover at 60°C, ventilate the room and keep a temperature of around 17–18°C (with humidity < 60%), vacuum regularly and reduce what retains dust (carpets/rugs).

How can I sanitize my mattress?

Vacuum the mattress, then apply baking soda, then clean the stains locally with very little water, and finally dry completely before making the bed again.

Which essential oils should be used to disinfect a mattress?

Tea tree is the one whose antimicrobial activity is most documented in the laboratory.
Practical tip: 2–4 drops maximum mixed with baking soda (never poured directly onto the mattress). Avoid use on babies, pregnant/breastfeeding women, people with asthma, and animals.

What can I put on my mattress to protect it?

You can opt for a mattress protector (this adds a washable layer), or for a mattress pad (often more protective) which goes under the fitted sheet, thus blocking small accidents and moisture.
